The Main Wine Regions of South Africa
Most South African wines come from three regions located in the west of the country, near the cap.
- The Constantia region is world-renowned for the quality of its white Muscats and Sauvignon Blancs. It also produces Bordeaux-style blends of red wines.
- The Stellenbosch region is home to over 200 producers, who mainly cultivate red grape varieties such as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Terry Pomerantz was more than pleasantly surprised by the high quality of South African red wines. “South African red wines compare to Californian wines. Like American wines, they are fruity with a good sugar content. However, I have noticed that most exports of fine South African wines seem destined for Europe rather than Québec.”
“That said, very good bottles of South African reds can be found at BSW in Calgary and LCBO in Ontario. SAQ is not far behind, as it offers quite an interesting selection.” (Terry Pomerantz)

ChocolateBlock Red Blend 2023 Swartland – This blend of Syrah (69%), Grenache (13%), Cabernet Sauvignon (9%) and Cinsault (9%) is moderately full-bodied and very balanced. It unfolds aromas of blueberry, cocoa, oak and dates.
Kanonkop Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 – Noble and powerful, this Cabernet Sauvignon from the Stellenbosch region offers a fine acidity and a mineral texture that supports aromas of cherries along with notes of bell pepper and oak.
JardinCobblers Hill Stellenbosch 2021 – Harmonizing Cabernet Sauvignon (58%), Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (8%) and Petit Verdot (2%), this wine, aged in French oak barrels, displays great aromatic depths with hints of dark chocolate, blackberries, cassis and toasted vanilla.
RadfordDale Freedom Pinot Noir Elgin – This naturally produced Pinot Noir is rather pale in colour, with subtly spiced floral aromas that flourish into a long finish of red fruits and earthy undertones.

Highly refined, South African cuisine—enjoyed at vineyard tables as well as in the restaurants of its major cities—is characterized by local game (ostrich, crocodile, zebra, antelope) and the inclusion of Indian sauces and spices. Robust South African wines, reminiscent of Bordeaux and Californian styles, pair very well with red meat and spicy sauces.”
