Terry’s Recent Discoveries in Red Wine

Since the SAQ removed American wines from its shelves, Terry Pomerantz, a great admirer of Californian red wines, has taken the opportunity to explore the infinite universe of European red wines.

1. Paradella Patrimonio (Corsica)

Barrel-aged in Radoux Blend barrels for 12 to 22 months, the Paradella Patrimonio is a premium red that stays true to Corsican tradition.

It is crafted primarily from the Niellucciu grape (90%), a variety related to Sangiovese, with 10% Grenache added.

This powerful red pairs well with game meats and strong cheeses.

2. Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino 2020 (Italy)

Terry Pomerantz loves Tuscany and its wines above all! He recently discovered this magnificent Sangiovese that is both delicate and deep.

The ripe red fruit flavours of this Montalcino, enhanced by peppery undertones and touches of thyme and bay leaf, pair nicely with a roasted beef fillet, a rack of lamb, or wild boar.

This top-tier Tuscan wine can be cellared for 10 to 20 years.

3. Saint-Patrice Châteauneuf du Pape (France)

This Rhone Valley red harmoniously brings together three grape varieties:

  • Grenache (40%)
  • Mourvèdre (30%)
  • Syrah (30%)

The Saint-Patrice showcases an elegant ruby colour. With a balanced profile and medium body, it reveals notes of blackberries and spiced plum on the palate. Cellared, Saint-Patrice can be kept for 5 to 20 years.

4. Baigorri Crianza (Spain)

This red from the Rioja region is composed mainly of Tempranillo (90%) and Garnacha (10%).

The flavours of candied red fruits and the robust intensity of the Baigorri complement tapas, empanadas, and chorizos.

Baigorri Crianza proudly joins Terry Pomerantz’s Top 5 best Spanish red wines.

5. Vinhas Velhas Tinto (Portugal)

This natural red from the Douro region unites three old-vine grape varieties:

  • Alfrocheiro (35%)
  • Baga (35%)
  • Jaen (30%)

Vinhas Velhas Tinto offers silky tannins and balanced acidity. On the palate, this red reveals aromas of cherry, blackberry, and plum, interspersed with hints of spices, coffee, and wood.

Vinhas Velhas Tinto could very well earn a place in Terry Pomerantz’s Top 5 best Portuguese red wines.
